about

Music for organ and string trio (violin, viola, and cello) after legendary tale in the life of St. Augustine (ad. 354-430) and a fresco by Benozzo Gozzoli.

The legend:
"Augustine was contemplating a definition of the Holy Trinity. One day while walking along the shore, he chanced on a child rushing back and forth from the breaking sea attempting to fill a small pool with water. He had only a seashell as a vessel. Augustine asked after his work. The boy told him that he was attempting to fill this little pool with the entire sea. Augustine claimed this was unfathomable. The boy replied that fully comprehending the whole of the Trinity was an equal task. And then the little child disappeared, leaving Augustine with a new revelation to ponder."

Score and parts published by Firehead Editions.

An interview with the composer on this work is now available in Brian Nixon's book Tilt, published by Wipf and Stock.
